IIBM Institute – 5 Tips to Succeed in an Online Course

Online learning has its rewards for both students and instructors, as well as its challenges as we’ve explored in this article. But with a sound strategy for learning, a strategy for education that is specific to the online environment, students have the opportunity to be successful online students and life-long learners. Like this quote that applies to both students and instructors, ‘learning is not a spectator sport

Online students should plan ahead and connect with instructors early.

1.    Develop a Sense of Self-Motivation
of us are just born with a natural sense of self-motivation, while others have to work toward achieving this highly valuable trait. Although you might be used to professors, classmates, and parents reminding you when assignments are due and what criteria these assignments must meet, you will have to prepare for an educational experience that requires initiative, motivation, and self-reliance.

          2Create a schedule
Time management is one of the most important components of ensuring a successful online education. When your instructors provide you with a syllabus for each class, there is potential that this will be the only time you receive information about due dates for upcoming assignments. This means you alone have to keep a calendar and maintain a schedule to ensure that all of your work is completed on time.

3. Have a consistent workspace
One thing online and in-class courses have in common is that students still need a place to study or complete assignments, whether that's at a coffee shop, the school library, or at home. Wherever students choose to study and complete assignments, they should make it a consistent location that's free of outside interferences,

4. Connect with instructors early
While instructors are available to help throughout the courses, Finley advises students to also find answers to questions independently, if possible. "Help is available but it's not going to be available at the snap of a finger, "You can't just think you're going to be able to reach right out with a problem. You have to be willing to go out and find things on your own."

5.  Stay organized
Students enrolled in traditional courses usually have a consistent schedule to follow each week, with in-class instruction followed by out-of-class assignments. For online courses, students may have to find their own ways to stay on top of their work,

"Students really, really need to be organized from the beginning to be successful in an online course,” online or paper folders should be created for each week, [and] the work area should be not only quiet but clean—keeping all coursework materials together."
